    IT rank of the day...
Surfing the web, and as usual, I surf on over to El Reg, to see whats shaking in the IT world. Well, after reading a few things, and thinking back on what I have been hearing from friends and the like in the mass media, its no real surprise to me why all the sudden Apple is seemingly on the comeback from IT obscurity.

I think its from the iPod halo effect to a degree, but thats not the real underlaying reason.

I think people are fed up with the Microsoft style business that runs the PC world.

Crap products tossed out as soon as they think that it might be ready, none to very little bugtesting, everything being out of date the moment you open the box, and the fortune you have to spend to stay current in software, hardware, and all those little tiny things you kinda sorta have to buy on the side.

Such as the mice that don't last more than six months, software updates that break all your software, so you have to buy the latest ones of those as well. Hardware that can't run programs released 6 months later.. the list goes on.

And then you get the stress that seems to be a big deal, the RIAA is up to the usual morass, that to avoid, most turn to iTunes. Gee. We see the MacMini, and of course the stylish, and in general well built, macs all over.

"Wait a sec.." They say, "I have this HP I bought a year ago, I can't play the latest games on, I've spent the cost of the machine in extra ram, new KB's, mice, you name it, and all that, and those Apple geeks over there are still using the same hardware they bought 3 years ago and they still can run anything they want? Why don't I get a piece of that action? And no, when I go to school, they are forcing me to spend money (At penn state its $160), to get "free Napster", a program that won't even run on half the computers here, one I have to pay even if I didn't have a computer, and I don't even get to keep the music unless I pay an additional buck per track? Why don't I just stick to iTunes?"

No kidding folks. MS, RIAA, and Napster are "encouraging" schools to "offer" the program to allow them to control illegal P2P programs by offering a huge discount. Of course, the State of Tennessee said that doesn't make sense, as its not a optional program for the students, and the schools can't afford the millions of dollars a year they are demanding. So, as the State told them "Thanks, but no thanks.", the next week RIAA sued some 14 schools in Tennessee. Of course, they say they just now found evidence that the school fosters illegal file sharing, nothing at all to do with the state saying no to Napster, not at all.

    Are we really that stupid?

Every school that the RIAA has sued was a school that turned down the RIAA/Napster program.

    Isn't that a funny coincidence?

Boston Pops Pop goes the Forth - R.I.P.
    WTF?

I go to Iraq and miss the past two Pops Goes the Forth, at least the audio to, but I got to see the video of the fireworks the past two years. I had a tradition going, 23 Years of never missing probably the best classical (with a smattering of contemporary, jazz, and other odds and ends) themed display in the nation from one of the best orchestra in the nation.

    Until this Year.

Its official folks: The most expensive whore in Boston is the Boston Pops for selling out to CBS.

Lets go over what it shouldn't be:
    A pop/county concert.
A Fireworks display timed to taped top 40 music.
A pair of talking heads walking out on stage to act like they are MC's, not the conductor.

Its supposed to be a great show of classical music, with a bit of jazz, maybe a touch of pop played by the orchestra in a classical manner, with a touch of vocals.

They didn't even play the 1812.

And the pops is the reason we think of fireworks with the 1812 overture, and fireworks makes us think of the 1812.

And no, the last 30 Seconds does not count as playing the 1812.

I vow this right now, Should I win the lotto, I pledge half of it, if not more, to the Pops, so they can afford going back to PBS and the way things was than suffer the fate of CBS marketing "experts" who think that saying, "Ah, the 1812, no one cares about that, lets play U2 over the loudspeakers, and Hootie, and whoever else sounds good and lets us play their stuff to the fireworks. This is better."

Its Crap. I hit the mute button and played three different 1812's while watching the fireworks. Didn't mesh, but oh well, was a lot better.

And how many commercials can you stuff in a hour show?

And then you get the half screen wipeouts by your local stations showing off the news.

And after all, we can't show the whole thing, after all, CBS has to make sure we get CSI, after all, thats more important than the celebrations of the countries birth.

The US is in a world of hurt in marketing comes before tradition, culture, and the right thing.

I'm moving to New Zealand, this country has gone to shit.

    Gah, gotta love work.
Been a while since I posted, but then work as been as all get out lately. Every week it seems I put another 1500 miles on my Van driving all over creation to get things done has destroyed 99% of my free time. bah. Could be worse I suppose. Cool thing is for the past month I have had a house guest, and believe you me, I love every second of it. :) Of course, now I have to watch my waistline more than I used to. But I can cope.

Ista - Left on the sands agian. :)
But not too upset about it really. Knew the odds was way out there for me to impress what I wanted to. But really. Ista is my nemesis, been trying to get in there for over a decade now. :)

Got to love the place though, all those I was hoping to see impress did, which is very cool. No bad impressions as far as I can tell which is cool. But from what I have heard, I should be good to go next go round, so we shall see how it goes. :)

Oh, L'cah and Moyra seem to be getting along pretty well. Interesting.

*hehs* DragonRiders... Gotta Collect Them All! And A Sad Passing.
Well well. This is what happens when you retire your longest running character. Everyone comes out of the woodwork to woo your new active alt. Kinda neat really, Have a Bronzer trying to giver her nice simple gifts, a Brownie who gives away silver chokers, so all she needs is a Bluie and and she will have the trifecta. :)

Yep. I said it right, Retired D'ru finally. September 92 to Feb 05. Quite a run for one character on PernMUSH if you ask me. Not to bad, had some fun with him, but then, I don't have any of his old logs, none of his old dear friends log on anymore, or anything. So all the times I logged on as ROo I had to deal with the memories of his background, and decided its time to move along with a new Character.

Roo, gonna miss you you old cad.

    Woot.. new place
Finally in the new house. Renting it, so it isn't mine per se, but...
Its nice. Could be better in some places, needs to have the outlets switched to the three prong, and a few items don't work right. No worries. A touch of paint here and there, and maybe a touch of cleaning, and viola. All good. Pretty small though, but thats livable. Have my cable modem hooked up, so have fast fast connections now. Very cool.

Its a small world after all...
Well, a few weeks as a Army Recruiter is done. Not too bad so far. Fun being viewed as the enemy of the average american, only out to convince the kids to go and get killed in Iraq. Bit of a downer, but some up things to it all. Well, OK, one. The army is paying for a course in Cleveland, and we get to bill drinks to the room. :)

    *woot* MWSF stuff!
    Oh... *drool*

Couple of really cool things came out, and yet again as it goes to macs, I gotta get them all.

From the Ultra small iPod shuffle, which, I'll admit isn't that must have, as cool as it is, but the biggie to me is no doubt,

Is the Mac Mini. It kinda looks like the old cube that got too friendly with a iPod dock, but its very very cool. Has all that you really need to use it as a base station for a home-network or a media centre, and its cheap!

    Yes, Cheap!

Woo, in Defiance, home of nothing, but exploding Microwaves
Well, in Defiance now. Stopped by the new office to get a idea on what's up, what I need to get ready for and all that. Seems simple, but looks like it will be a good deal of work till I get my feet on the ground.

Staying at a Motel that isn't too expensive for a week, decent place. Not El Cheapo, but still nice. Except for the exploding Microwaves.

    Yes, Exploding Microwaves.

    Yes, welcome to Defiance.

heh - Cleveland... Well, is pretty damn cold.
    Back in Cleveland Ohio. Woot?

Lots of snow, lots of cold, and then you have the Roman Burger. Oh yes. And East of Chicago... and Marco's, and 24 hour Diners ran by Lebanese, Polish, Russian, and you name it if they are from Central Europe. Lots of fun. Pretty nice, its 2 in the morning, starving, and can get a good meal anyways.

Folks here still can't drive, the streets have more potholes and bumps than I remember, and the Cav's still suck.

My old store that I ran is still around, though they finally got rid of the paranoid freak so it looks like it might have chance.

Talked to Barb today, she is doing good, and I hope to get the divorce settled soonest. Forgot I left so much in her house. *bahs*
